Vol. 560 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospitals Building Programme.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

72 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health and Children the position regarding the extension to Bandon Community Hospital, which was announced two years ago; when it is expected to commence and be completed. [2228/03]

The provision of health services in Bandon is a matter for the Southern Health Board. The board has indicated that the enlargement of Bandon community hospital from 23 beds to 40 beds is included in the board's programme for services for older people, to be carried out under the National Development Plan 2000-2006. The project involves the redesign of the existing accommodation and the addition of new accommodation to provide an integrated 40 bed hospital to meet present day standards of care.

My Department, in conjunction with the health boards, is reviewing the national development plan in the light of the outturn position for 2002 and the requirements for 2003, including meeting existing contractual commitments for the current year. When this process is completed, which I expect should be shortly, my Department and the boards will then be in a position to assess what new capital priorities can be progressed. I appreciate the importance attached to the proposal for Bandon Community Hospital and my Department will continue to liaise closely with the Southern Health Board in the matter.
