Vol. 560 No. 3

Written Answers. - Radon Gas Levels.

Joe Sherlock

Ceist:

173 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the call made by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland for the introduction of a scheme of grants to assist householders with the cost of reducing high radon gas levels in their homes; if it is intended to introduce such a scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2397/03]

I am aware that the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland has advocated the introduction of a radon remediation grant scheme in respect of domestic dwellings to assist householders to carry out radon remediation work on their homes. As regards the introduction of such a scheme, the position, as stated in the reply to Question No. 466 of 19 November 2002, is that due to budgetary constraints, my Department will not be in a position to provide Exchequer funding for a radon remediation grant scheme in 2003. I refer the Deputy to the reply to Question No. 29 of 10 October 2002 in which I outline remediation options for reducing radon in existing buildings.
