Vol. 560 No. 5

Written Answers. - Missing Persons.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

143 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the extent to which the issue of missing persons is followed up by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3113/03]

In October 2002 I launched the missing persons helpline which is operated by Victim Support. This dedicated helpline is operating as a counselling and referral service and as a primary point of contact for the families of missing persons. The helpline provides advice and psychological support for families of missing persons as well as structured liaison with the Garda Síochána. Searching for missing persons is, of course, the responsibility of the Garda auth orities, as are the deployment of Garda resources and the investigative methods used. The Garda Síochána operates a website which gives details of certain missing persons. On an international level, the Garda Síochána liaises with Interpol and relevant non-governmental organisations where appropriate.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that the Garda Síochána does all in its power to locate missing persons and that it provides considerable support to families. I am further assured that all files on missing persons remain open and under continuous review until the person is located, or, in the case of a missing person who is presumed drowned, a verdict to that effect by the coroner. I am also assured that contact is maintained on a regular basis with the families of missing persons.
