I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the professional and ethical standards in the Garda Síochána were reviewed by the Garda Síochána during 2002 and a new declaration of professional values and ethical standards was approved by the commissioner for circulation to every member of the Garda Síochána. In developing the declaration of professional values and ethical standards in the Garda Síochána, I am informed by the Garda Commissioner that he has taken care to ensure that it is both comprehensive and decisive. The declaration of professional values and ethical standards will guide and inform the professional practice of each member and provide a template to audit the professional practice of the Garda Síochána. I understand that the physical process of printing and circulation of this document is under way. I have no plans to establish a separate code of ethics for the Garda Síochána.
