Vol. 562 No. 1

Written Answers - Strategic Management Initiative.

John Bruton

Ceist:

140 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself with the progress made under SMI in publishing performance indicators by Departments. [5443/03]

Under the terms of the Public Service Management Act, Departments and offices are obliged to submit draft three year strategy statements to Ministers setting out strategic priorities, high level objectives and associated performance indicators. Commentary on progress made in achieving the strategic priorities and their related objectives, including commentary in relation to performance indicators, is set out in annual progress reports. I am satisfied that these indicators provide a basis for assessments of performance to be made over a wide number of policy areas.

Further improvements in Civil Service management systems and procedures are taking place in the context of the ongoing modernisation programme. Modern financial and non-financial information systems, and performance management systems are being put in place to underpin the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of output delivery.
