Vol. 562 No. 2

Written Answers - Bloomsday Celebrations.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

121 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism his plans for the centenary of the publication of James Joyce's novel, Ulysses, in 2004; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5499/03]

I am very aware of the importance of celebrating the centenary of "Bloomsday", that fictional day, 16 June 1904, on which the character Leopold Bloom traverses Dublin city in James Joyce's masterpiece Ulysses.

To this effect, I announced on 21 January the establishment of the Bloomsday Centenary Co-ordinating Committee. The committee, which will be chaired by the director of the National Library of Ireland, includes representatives from the Arts Council, the James Joyce Centre, the tourism sector, the arts sector, Dublin City Council, and the Abbey Theatre, among others.
The purpose of the centenary committee is not to assume responsibility for the day-to-day organisation of events celebrating Joyce and his unique work, but rather to co-ordinate the plans of the many literary and cultural organisations that intend to arrange special Bloomsday centenary events. This will I believe maximise the interest and enjoyment that can be generated both at home and abroad. I have also asked the committee during its term to promote Joyce's work and to encourage the development of quality events that will appeal to a broad range of the Irish public, but especially also to tourists and potential tourists.
The committee had its first meeting last week and with assistance from my Department it will be actively pursuing many avenues proposed by its members according to their relevant areas of expertise.
