Vol. 562 No. 4

Written Answers - Departmental Properties.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

186 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Defence the position regarding his promise to allocate 50 acres of land at Gormanstown for the use of the National Community Games. [6333/03]

The question of the provision of a venue for the National Community Games is a matter in the first instance for the sports organisation concerned. The provision of Government assistance to sporting organisations is primarily a matter for the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism. I understand the question of a venue for the National Community Games was discussed recently by the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism with the games organisers.

I have had two meetings with representatives of the National Community Games in the past year, as I am anxious to help in any way I can within the limits of the constraints placed upon me. I will continue to explore the matter with the Minister, Deputy O'Donoghue.

In the context of disposing of Defence property considered surplus to military requirements, it is incumbent on me to obtain the highest price possible to fund much needed investment to meet the equipment needs of the Defence Forces.
