220 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Finance the reasons for the failure of the ECOFIN meeting on 18 February 2003 to reach agreement on proposals for an EU-wide energy tax; the position the Government took on this issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6594/03]

The item in question was not reached on the agenda due to the pressure of other business. The Council postponed the discussion until its next meeting on 7 March. This postponement will enable the Presidency to continue to deal with some outstanding issues on this matter which do not involve Ireland.
