Vol. 562 No. 6

Written Answers - Accident and Emergency Services.

Eamon Ryan

Ceist:

21 Mr. Eamon Ryan asked the Minister for Health and Children his plans to provide training for accident and emergency department staff in crisis intervention and the safe containment and defusing of violent situations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6747/03]

An independent review of security arrangements in accident and emergency departments of all hospitals in the State providing these services was undertaken in 2002. My Department provided €2.35 million in 2002 to the Eastern Regional Health Authority and the health boards towards the cost associated with the enhancement of security arrangements. The review recommended the introduction of a range of measures aimed at enhancing security arrangements in such departments. These recommendations include closer liaison with local gardaí in relation to providing advice on security measures. Training courses in breakaway techniques and aggression management have also been recommended for staff working in accident and emergency departments. It is a matter for health agencies and hospitals to ensure that appropriate training is available to staff who may require skills in this area.
