488 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on the comments of the Garda Commissioner that gardaí driving the Taoiseach and Cabinet Ministers can break the speed limit at the discretion of the individual garda driver concerned; his further views on whether this includes football matches, election canvassing and delivering a Minister's family to the family home and elsewhere; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am forwarding to the Deputy the full text of the Garda Commissioner statement. I concur with the view of the Garda Commissioner that members of the Garda should, when driving official vehicles, adhere to the standards laid down by the Garda driving school and set an example for other road users by driving with care.
