Written Answers - National Monuments.

Paul Connaughton

527 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when it is proposed to clear out the stone yard next to Portumna Castle, County Galway, and convert it into a visitor amenity area. [7022/03]

Ceist:

528 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the long-term proposals Dúchas has for the effective use of the former forestry yard and the orchard across from Portumna Abbey, Portumna, County Galway. [7023/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 527 and 528 together.

A sub-depot serving Portumna Castle and Demesne and other national monuments in east Galway, north Clare and Clonmacnoise operates out of the 17th century service yard in the grounds of Portumna Castle.

It is intended in time to relocate this sub-depot to the 19th century courtyard opposite Portumna Priory in order to provide the sub-depot with additional space and improved facilities. Some preliminary work is already being undertaken to this latter courtyard.
