Vol. 563 No. 1

Written Answers - Live Register.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

198 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Taoiseach the number of people unemployed in Cork South-West. [6803/03]

The exact information requested by the Deputy is not available. Statistics on employment and unemployment are compiled, at a regional level, from the Quarterly National Household Survey, QNHS. The latest statistics show that there were 11,700 people classified as unemployed in the south-west region in the September-November quarter of 2002. The south-west region consists of Cork city, Cork county and Kerry. Sub-regional statistics, of the kind requested by the Deputy, are not available from the Quarterly National Household Survey.

The live register series gives a monthly breakdown of the number of people claiming unemployment assistance, unemployment benefit and other claimants registered with the Department of Social and Family Affairs. Figures are published for each county and each local social welfare office. A breakdown by postal district is not available. The most recent information available is for January 2003. It should be noted that: The live register is not a definitive measure of unemployment as it includes part-time workers, seasonal and casual workers entitled to unemployment assistance or benefit. Statistics on unemployment are measured at regional level by the Quarterly National Household Survey; and the exact area covered by each local office is not limited to the immediate locality of the particular office. For instance, in the Tallaght local office there may be registered persons from the Blessington area.

The live register figures for the local offices in Cork and Kerry for January 2003 are set out in the following table:–

Dan Neville

Ceist:

199 Mr. Neville asked the Taoiseach the plans to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the rising of Robert Emmett. [6908/03]

As I said in the course of my address at the launch of the programme of the Robert Emmet Bicentary Commemoration on 20 September 2002, a significant proportion of this year's commemoration budget will go to the Robert Emmet Association. A sum of €7,000 was paid to the association last year to cover expenses already incurred and it is expected that approximately €40,000 will be given on receipt of costings of the details of the planned programme. The programme consists of publications, lectures, conference and public events to commemorate the life of Robert Emmet as well as people such as Anne Devlin, Sarah Curran, Thomas Russell, Jemmy Hope, Michael Dwyer and Thomas Moore.
