Vol. 563 No. 4

Written Answers - Sale of Passports.

Joe Costello

Ceist:

546 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has examined the Bar 90 file relating to the sale of passports to a person (details supplied) and ten others; if his attention has been drawn to the irregularities in the file; if he intends to take action regarding matters in the file; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7896/03]

I have informed this House in response to numerous parliamentary questions over the past few months that the Taoiseach asked me to examine a particular file relating to the naturalisation of the person in question, as well as ten members of his family.

My examination of the file revealed that the passports and naturalisations in question were effected in a manner which by-passed usual formalities and which ignored failure by the applicants to comply with elementary documentary requirements. In that context, I have sought legal advice on the issues arising as a result of my investigation. This matter is the subject of ongoing discussions between officials in my Department and the Office of the Attorney General.
