Vol. 563 No. 4

Written Answers - Human Rights Training.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Ceist:

562 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if there are plans to universalise Garda human rights training by extending the new human rights training module as a mandatory in-service course to upskill serving gardaí; and if not, if he will consider such a plan. [8001/03]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the proposed overall strategy on human rights education-training in the Garda Síochána sets out the vision for human rights training for all gardaí.

The human rights training module currently being delivered to student and probationer gardaí is an aspect of this strategy. I have recently outlined to this House on 12 March details of the human rights training for the Garda Síochána currently provided at the Garda College, Templemore.

The proposed strategy envisages that human rights training would be imparted to current serving members as part of an in-service training module following further developments of the human rights training programme.
