Vol. 564 No. 2

Written Answers - Juvenile Offenders.

Fergus O'Dowd

Ceist:

208 Mr. O'Dowd asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if St. Patrick's unit in Mountjoy Prison has been made available for juvenile offenders in accordance with announcements made previously; the number of offenders currently in this unit; the age category of such offenders; the costs of the renovation of this unit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9045/03]

The preparation of the special unit at St. Patrick's Institution for juvenile offenders is nearing completion. The age categories which it will serve is now being considered in the context of the phased implementation of the Children Act 2001. A final decision will be made on the matter shortly.

The renovations which have created this new facility involved adaptations to B1 and B2 wings at St. Patrick's Institution along with the construction of an education facility for young offenders. The proposed hand over date of these new facilities is 4 April 2003, at which time "fit out" will be able to commence. This involves both furniture and equipment installation. Further work commenced in January 2003 on B wing basement in order to provide more facilities for the 16 and 17 year old male age group. The expected hand over date of this section of the facility is 19 May 2003. The cost of the entire project is budgeted at €8,148,833.16, including VAT and professional fees. The centre, when completed, will have accommodation for approximately 45 boys.
