Vol. 564 No. 2

Written Answers - European Security and Defence Policy.

Ciarán Cuffe

Ceist:

84 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for Defence his Department's views on suggestions from the chairman of the EU's military committee, that the EU defence structures could constitute the European pillar of a renewed NATO; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9002/03]

Ciarán Cuffe

Ceist:

96 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for Defence his views on recent suggestions by a person (details supplied) that the EU's defence policy should encompass something comparable to the homeland defence in the United States; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9001/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 84 and 96 together.

The chairman of the EU military committee in making these suggestions was speaking in a personal capacity. His personal views, as reported, do not reflect the position of the EU Council in relation to European security and defence policy. The parameters for the development of European security and defence policy are set out in the EU Treaties and the successive European Council conclusions.

Question No. 85 answered with Question No. 67.
