During the months of June and July 2002 iodine tablets were distributed by post to households nationwide as part of the national emergency plan for nuclear accidents. A packet containing six potassium iodate tablets BP85mg was to be delivered to each household. This is sufficient to provide a single dose for each member of an average sized household.
On 21 October 2002 my Department placed a public notice in national newspapers advising persons who did not receive a supply of tablets or who did not receive a sufficient number of tablets via the postal distribution, to contact their local health board and arrange for the collection of the additional tablets required. Contact details for each health board were included in the public notice.
Recently my Department wrote directly to the persons referred to by the Deputy advising them that, if they had not already done so, they should contact their local health board and request the number of tablets required.
