Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

228 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if Dublin City Council has requested the assistance of the Garda Síochána with the monitoring of CCTV cameras being installed along the Royal Canal in Dublin 1 and 7 or at any other location; the response of the Garda authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10159/03]

A CCTV advisory committee was established by the Garda Commissioner to evaluate CCTV applications. It is not aware of a request from Dublin City Council to monitor CCTV cameras along the Royal Canal in Dublin 1 and 7 areas. Nor has the chief superintendent, Dublin metropolitan region north central received a formal request for such monitoring.

The chief superintendent conducted a review of the needs of a CCTV system within his division. A report regarding his assessment has been submitted to the committee which is assessing it at present. Its recommendations will issue in due course.
