Vol. 566 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Marian Harkin

Ceist:

260 Ms Harkin asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in view of exceptional circumstances, a person (details supplied) in County Sligo is qualified for the position of a PWT teaching post in mathematics-computers in the education unit at Castlerea Prison. [12753/03]

It is a matter for the vocational education committee concerned, as employer, to determine the overall suitability of an applicant for appointment to a permanent teaching post. All committees has been provided with details of qualifications approved by my Department for the purpose of such teaching appointments. If an applicant for appointment presents a qualification that has not been approved by my Department, committees have been advised to refer the qualification to my Department for assessment of its suitability for teaching purposes.

The qualification in mathematics referred to by the Deputy is not one that has been approved by my Department for appointment to a permanent teaching post. Neither has it been referred for assessment, to my Department, by County Roscommon VEC, the employer in the case of the teaching service in Castlerea Prison. Should County Roscommon VEC submit full details of the qualification in question to my Department, an assessment of its suitability for teaching purposes will be carried out as soon as possible.
