Vol. 566 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Joe Sherlock

Ceist:

151 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of juvenile liaison officers in the gardaí at the latest date for which figures are available; his plans to extend the scheme in view of the proven success of it in dealing with juvenile offenders; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12794/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, as of 9 May 2003, there were 98 juvenile liaison officers, JLOs, within the Garda Síochána, of whom four are engaged in administrative duties in the Garda National Juvenile Office, Harcourt Square, Dublin 2.

I am further informed that the continuing human and other resource implications of the Children Act 2001, including JLO numbers, is the subject of review within the Garda Síochána. I understand that this review is expected to be finalised in the third quarter of this year.
