Vol. 567 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Uniform.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

184 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the occasions it is permissible for a uniformed member of the Garda Síochána to remove or conceal his or her number in the course of duty. [14160/03]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that shoulder numbers and letters have been issued to all members of garda and sergeant rank in the uniform services throughout the force.

The divisional letters, numbers and badge of rank, where applicable, should be worn on the shirt, blouse, tunic, patrol jacket, pullover or greatcoat as the case may be. These instructions came into effect at 6 a.m. on Monday 16 September, 2002.
I am further informed that there is no provision for members in uniform to remove or conceal his or her shoulder numbers in the course of duty.
