Vol. 567 No. 3

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 and I will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted them to my office.

I request the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent and national importance, namely, to ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to discuss the implications of the collapse yesterday of a court case in Cork concerning the disappearance several years ago of a young woman and her possible killing, which was dismissed due to concerns about the collection and presentation and evidence, highlighting the need to be able to keep such prosecutions ongoing in the event of procedural mishandling.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate an issue of urgent national importance, which I raised yesterday and will continue to raise, namely, the continuing worry and instability caused by the lack of clarity on third level fees, which was exacerbated by the comments of the Minister for Education and Science in the Seanad last night together with the behaviour of the junior partner in Government and the indications that this battle in the media is a phoney war, which will result in a loan scheme agreeable to both Government parties, that will lead to a brain drain and graduates and students not studying here.

The Deputy should put on a tie.

That is tongue in cheek.

Listen to the Muppets on the Government backbenches raising trivial issues.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent important, namely, the failure of the Minister for Education and Science to allow, as of right, a teacher representative on the board of the management of St. Joseph's special school, Ferryhouse, Clonmel, County Tipperary; the resultant industrial action forced on the teaching staff; and to allow the Minister to make a statement on the matter.

Under Standing Order 31, I seek leave to move the adjournment of the Dáil to discuss a specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, namely, the Garda clamp down on pirate radio stations, including Jazz FM, Choice FM, Ice FM and Premier FM in the Dublin area, that is reminiscent of a return to the bad old days of the 1980s; that the Government reconsiders the use of Garda resources to stifle one of the few forms of creative musical expression in this city that is not available on mainstream radio and ensures minority musical tastes are adequately catered for.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to deal with a matter of urgent importance, namely, the systemic problems in the economy, which, according to reports, have made this country the most expensive in the euro zone; and the need to sanction the culprits who are ripping off consumers and endangering Irish competitiveness, tourism, agriculture and other vital industries.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, that the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources should outline the Government's position on the enforcement and the protection of fish stocks within the fishing conservation area known as the Irish Box; if he will confirm that the contents of an internal memorandum within the Department of Defence, which states he had requested that the Defence Forces take a cautious approach to enforcement within the box last December and, while movements within the box area should be monitored, vessels should not be detained or arrested solely for entering the box area; whether, for the past five months, if more than the allowed 40 Spanish fishing vessels entered the Irish Box they would not have been detained or confronted by the Irish navy; whether incorrect information was put on the record of this House, giving the impression that attitudes to enforcement within the Irish Box had not changed since the commencement of the common fisheries policy review on December 2003; and if he wishes to set the record straight on this important issue.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle

Having considered the matters raised they are not in order under Standing Order 31.
