Vol. 567 No. 3

Written Answers. - Use of Pesticides.

Eamon Ryan

Ceist:

18 Mr. Eamon Ryan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the fact that 50 towns across Canada have banned or restricted the cosmetic use of pesticides; and his plans to introduce measures here. [14059/03]

Many towns and cities in Canada have restricted the use of lawn, turf and garden pesticides intended for aesthetic or cosmetic purposes and exceptions were made for golf courses and sports fields.

Three of the five active substances concerned are not permitted on the market in Ireland. Detailed reviews of the two other active substances and of products containing them have been undertaken. Those reviews will among other things have particular regard to the need to ensure that the health of users, amateur and professional, is protected and unacceptable influence on the environment is avoided.

I am satisfied the standard of protection for humans and for the environment achieved through the regulatory system for plant protection products in Ireland, compares very favourably with that currently in place in Canada.
