Vol. 567 No. 3

Written Answers. - Beef Classification System.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

75 Mr. P. McGrath asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he is satisfied with the procedure for grading of beef; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13921/03]

The introduction of a beef carcase classification system in all member states in 1982 provided a standardised system of carcase classification. This ensured an equitable basis for payment to the producer and a uniform method for reporting of prices for slaughtered animals. The weekly price data from each member state, when collated and analysed by the European Commission, provides a basis for market management decisions under the common organisation of the market. I am satisfied that the present grading system is operating satisfactorily. The accuracy of classification is routinely controlled both by supervisory staff of my own Department and also by visits from the European Commission's Carcase Control Group.

I am proceeding with plans for the introduction of mechanical classification. The decision to allow grading by means of mechanical classification is one that will be taken initially at EU level and an EU regulation allowing for the introduction of mechanical classification is due to be adopted next month. Testing of machines should commence in September-October with a view to machines being operational by year-end.
