Vol. 567 No. 5

Written Answers. - Psychological Service.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

238 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science his proposals to provide resource teaching hours for four students of a primary school (details supplied) in County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14251/03]

John Deasy

Ceist:

267 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will examine an application by a school (details supplied) in County Waterford which requested resource teaching hours for a number of students on the recommendation of psychologists from the national educational psychology service and were turned down; if he will re-examine the matter; and the reason, in spite of assessments clearly recommending help for these children, it has not been provided by his Department. [14732/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 238 and 267 together.

The national educational psychological service agency, NEPS, has extensively evaluated the special needs of three of the pupils in the school referred to by the Deputies. The outcome of the evaluation was that further information is needed in regard to the specific learning problems of one of the pupils concerned; and in the case of the other two pupils, the level of support sought did not conform to the support levels identified in the circulars as applicable to the disability category in question.

My Department advised the school of the position by letter dated 9 April 2003. The application for additional support for the fourth pupil was received in my Department on 6 March and has yet to be examined by NEPS.
