Adjournment Debate Matters.

Acting Chairman

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Gay Mitchell – to raise the reply to Question No. 171, Ref. 14076/03, of 22 May 2003 in relation to a 16 year old who is seeking a visa to join her parents and their other two children in Ireland, especially given the unacceptable tone and nature of the reply received; (2) Deputy McGinley – cailliúint 48 post i monarcha BMR, Gaoth Dobhair, ag an deireadh seachtaine agus an ghéarchéim dífhostaíochta ar eastát tionscail Ghaoth Dobhair mar ar cailleadh 290 post le trí bliana anuas; (3) Deputy Glennon – the refusal to provide temporary accommodation at St. Brendan's national school, Loughshinney, Skerries, Fingal, County Dublin; (4) Deputy Penrose – the need for the Minister for Social and Family Affairs to reconsider the cutbacks she has made in the back to education allowance scheme; (5) Deputy O'Sullivan – the need for the Minister for Social and Family Affairs to reconsider the cutbacks she has made in the back to education allowance scheme; (6) Deputy Finian McGrath – the serious staffing situation in Belgrove senior boys' school, Clontarf, Dublin 3; (7) Deputy Breeda Moynihan-Cronin – the lack of funding for essential work at Holy Cross national school in Killarney, County Kerry; (8) Deputy Neville – the provision of a new school for Kilfinane, County Limerick; (9) Deputy Coveney – the decision of the ESB to close one third of the ESB retails shops across the country and the consequence this decision will have for rural areas; (10) Deputy Harkin – if the Department of Education and Science intends to cap the number of post-leaving certificate students for September 2003 at current levels; (11) Deputy Ring – if any provision has been put in place instead of the student summer jobs scheme for summer 2003 for third level students; (12) Deputy Cowley – the need to take steps for a pupil with very special needs (details supplied) to attend Cuilmore national school, An Choil Mhór; and (13) Deputy Ó Snodaigh – in the light of assurances in the Government's progress report, and until such time as the planned internal review is completed, the need to intervene on an urgent basis to reverse the latest cuts which led to the closure of six CE schemes in the Dublin 12 area earlier this week.

The matters raised by Deputies Glennon, Harkin, McGinley and Penrose have been selected for discussion.

On a point of order, can we get a guarantee that the Minister for Education and Science will take two of those matters and that the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment and the Minister for Social and Family Affairs will be present for the Adjournment debate? Members of the public see this important process being relegated due to the neglect and indifference shown by Ministers to one of the few tools people have to raise important issues in the House. Can we get a guarantee that Ministers will carry out their duties and turn up to respond to matters taken on the Adjournment?

Acting Chairman

The Ceann Comhairle will deal with that matter.

It is not a matter for the Chair.

It is an important matter for the House.
