Vol. 568 No. 5

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

262 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will examine the application for additional support from a school (details supplied) in Dublin 11 in order to cater for a large number of students with special needs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16545/03]

My Department allocates resource posts, special needs assistant posts and concessionary teaching hours to second level schools to cater for pupils with special educational needs. Applications for such support are made to my Department by the relevant school authorities. Each application is considered on the basis of the assessed needs of the pupil(s) in question and determined on the advice of the psychological service.

The school in question has applied for additional resources to cater for a number of pupils with special needs. This application has been forwarded to the national educational psychological service for its recommendation as to the nature and level of support required. As soon as the report of the psychological service has been received and considered, my Department will notify the school authorities of the outcome of its application.
