Vol. 568 No. 5

Written Answers. - Nuclear Plants.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

107 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government if he has raised with the British authorities reports that there were serious concerns regarding the structural stability of the roof of a waste storage facility at the Sellafield nuclear plant; the response he has received; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16530/03]

Then Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government raised the issue of alleged problems affecting the structural stability of the roof of a waste storage facility at the Sellafield nuclear plant with Mr. Brian Wilson, then Minister for Energy in the UK, at our meeting in Dublin on 28 May 2003. The Minister asked to be provided with an urgent report on the matter which he undertook to do. The Minister has also asked the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland to raise these reports with its regulatory counterparts in the UK, the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate and the Health and Safety Executive, and to furnish a report. Based on this report, the Minister intends to write to the UK Environment Secretary on the matter.
