Vol. 569 No. 3

Written Answers. - Residential Institutions Redress Board.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

264 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science the amounts paid to date in respect of the cash payments agreed to be made to the State under the deed of indemnity agreed between the Government and the Conference of Religious Superiors in Ireland signed on 5 June 2002; the date on which each payment was made; the purpose to which the funds paid over will now be applied; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17669/03]

Under the terms of the indemnity agreement between the State and CORI dated 5 June 2003, there is provision for a cash payment of €41.14 million to be paid to the State party. This payment by CORI has been made in full. The first payment of €12,654,000 was received on 5 June 2002. This was followed by four equal instalments of €7,121,500 on 5 September 2002, 5 December 2002, 6 February 2003 and 6 May 2003. A sum of €12.7 million of the €41.14 million was transferred into a separate account in January 2003 and will be used for educational programmes for former residents of institutions and their families in accordance with section 7(i) of the indemnity agreement. The balance will be used to meet the cost of awards made by the Residential Institutions Redress Board.
