Vol. 570 No. 2

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Seán Power

Ceist:

518 Mr. S. Power asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the percentage of waste placed in landfill sites in 2002 which was domestic waste; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18274/03]

The Environment Protection Agency's national waste database report for 1998 is the most up to date source of published waste statistics. According to the report, the total waste accepted into Irish landfills in 1998 was 8,780,201 tonnes, of which 1,125,698, or 13%, was household waste.

I expect to have updated statistics shortly when the EPA publishes its national waste database report for 2001.

Ceist:

519 Mr. S. Power asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the local authorities which provide a refuse bin collection; the number which provide more than one bin; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18275/03]

The information available to my Department indicates that approximately half of the 88 local authorities for the purposes of the Waste Management Acts still directly provide a domestic waste collection service in their areas. A listing of the local authorities concerned is being finalised and will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.

In terms of separate collection, the latest information indicates that, taking both local authority and private collection areas together, segregated collection services are available to approximately 500,000 households in the State.
