Vol. 570 No. 2

Written Answers. - Electronic Voting.

Finian McGrath

Ceist:

523 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government his views on concerns (details supplied) regarding electronic voting; and his further detailed views on this potential threat to the democratic process. [18310/03]

I am confident that the new electronic voting system will enhance rather than weaken the integrity, security and efficiency of the Irish electoral process. Electronic voting is a desirable modernisation of our electoral procedures and public reaction to the use of voting machines in the pilot constituencies has been extremely positive.

The Nedap voting machine has been used successfully for years and gained the acceptance of the public and politicians in other countries and I anticipate a similar outcome in Ireland. I refer also to the reply to Question No. 79 of 17 June 2003.
