Vol. 570 No. 4

Written Answers. - Family Law.

David Stanton

Ceist:

336 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans to propose changes regarding men's rights in family law; the representations he has received in this regard; the requests he has to meet with groups who have or wish to make representations in order to further the rights of separated fathers; his plans in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19478/03]

I have received a number of representations of the kind referred to by the Deputy from groups and individuals and I have suggested to groups that they meet with officials in my Department, who will report back to me, so that I can consider how their concerns might be addressed.

In this context, it is relevant to say that I propose to change thein camera rule which applies to family law proceedings so as to allow for the general reporting of overall trends while continuing to respect the privacy of all those involved. I intend to publish the necessary legislation this year. I should also add that family law is kept under continual review in my Department and a family law Bill forms part of the Government's legislation programme.
