The Ombudsman for Children Act 2002 provides for the establishment of the Office of the Ombudsman for Children within two years of the legislation being passed.
Work is at an advanced stage in my Department in relation to all aspects of establishing the office including the appointment of the Ombudsman for Children. As the Deputy will be aware, it has always been the intention that children would be involved in the selection process. This is the first time this approach has been used for selection within the public sector and considerable work is required to ensure that children play a meaningful role in the recruitment process. This work is being carried out by officials from my Department working closely with the National Children's Office and the Civil Service Commission. I expect the post of Ombudsman to be advertised shortly.
