Vol. 572 No. 5

Adjournment Debate. - Special Educational Needs.

Finian McGrath

Ceist:

109 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if urgent assistance will be given to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 9; and if this person's family will receive the maximum advice, support and assistance. [23730/03]

The position is that ten hours home tuition per week until the end of July 2003 were sanctioned for the pupil referred to by the Deputy on the 30 April 2003. A further application for home tuition for the current school year is under active consideration and a decision on this application will be conveyed to the family shortly.

I further understand that the pupil is enrolled in a special pre-school for children on the autistic spectrum since September 2003. This facility has the support of a teacher and two special needs assistants.

The pupil in question is currently on the waiting list for the CABAS autism unit in Kilbarrack, Dublin, which is grant-aided by my Department. Applications for enrolment in the CABAS unit are a matter for the management authorities of this facility.
