Vol. 573 No. 3

Written Answers. - Register of Electors.

Olwyn Enright

Ceist:

709 Ms Enright asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the number of non-Irish nationals resident here who are aged over 18 and who will be eligible to vote in the European elections in 2004; if this information will be provided in a breakdown by nationality; the steps he will take to ensure that potential voters' attention is brought to, and that they exercise their right to vote; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25492/03]

Details of electors eligible to vote at the 2004 European elections will not be available until the 2004-05 registers of electors are published by registration authorities in February 2004. Analysis of those registers will provide information on numbers of Irish citizens, UK citizens, non-Irish EU nationals and non-EU nationals resident in the State. The information in the registers does not give a breakdown of country of origin of non-nationals other than UK citizens. According to the current register of February 2003 to February 2004, approximately 36,000 non-Irish nationals are registered to vote at European elections.

I refer also to the reply to Question No. 18 of 16 October 2003.
