Vol. 573 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Marian Harkin

Ceist:

117 Ms Harkin asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will provide the necessary advice to a person (details supplied) as to the courses this person may undertake to make up the shortfalls in approved subjects as outlined by the Registration Council on qualifications for the purpose of admission to the register for intermediate, (secondary) school teachers. [25926/03]

The Registration Council is a statutory body responsible for the recognition of qualifications for the purpose of teaching in voluntary secondary schools.

The qualification held by the person referred to by the Deputy was found by the Registration Council to be unsuitable for the purpose of teaching curricular subjects to second level students. The person in question was advised as to the areas of third level studies of which satisfactory evidence would be required in order to supplement the certification already presented. It is a matter for the person in question to arrange to undertake appropriate courses of study in consultation with a recognised third level institution in order to bring her qualifications to the required standard.
