Vol. 573 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

131 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Fingal County Council has threatened to close Morton Stadium, Santry, Dublin 9, on 1 January 2004 due to lack of financial resources; if his attention has further been drawn to the impact this will have on athletes, some of whom are preparing for the Olympic Games in Athens who use both the indoor and outdoor facilities at the stadium throughout the year; and if the necessary steps will be taken to ensure that the outstanding financial problems are resolved to keep this facility open. [25999/03]

I have been made aware of the issues involving funding for the operation of Morton Stadium. I am anxious to ensure that the situation is resolved and my Department is currently in discussions with Fingal County Council, the Irish Sports Council and the other organisations involved in the funding and operation of Morton Stadium to ensure that it remains available as a public facility.
