Billy Timmins

Ceist:

156 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position in relation to the installation of a one way glass system for use by victims and witnesses to crimes in the Garda stations in County Wicklow; the Garda stations which have this system in place; the plans there are to install the system in all the Garda stations in County Wicklow; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Ceist:

157 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position in relation to the installation of a one way glass system for use by victims and witnesses to crimes in the Garda stations in County Carlow; the Garda stations which have this system in place; the plans there are to install the system in all the Garda stations in County Carlow; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25898/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 156 and 157 together. I have been informed by the Garda authorities that there are no stations in County Carlow or County Wicklow that have one way glass systems installed for use by victims and witnesses. There are no plans to install such systems in Garda stations. A witness in a formal identification parade may identify a suspect by means of numbers rather than by physical touching. The object is to provide the witness with an opportunity to view the parade and make an independent evaluation and/or identification.
