Vol. 574 No. 1

Written Answers. - Alternative Energy Projects.

Ciarán Cuffe

Ceist:

119 Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources further to the recent bogslide in the area of the proposed Derrybrien wind farm, if his Department will be involved in a review by the ESB of the occurrence in the Derrybrien area; and if such a report will be made public. [26342/03]

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

130 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if his Department plans to undertake a review of the mudslide in Derrybrien; and if so, the timescale such a review will be under. [26369/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 119 and 130 together.

The development of a wind farm at Derrybrien by Hibernian Wind Power, a subsidiary company of the ESB, is a day-to-day operational matter for the company and is not one in which I have a function. Any review by the ESB into the occurrence of the bogslide at Derrybrien is a matter for the company and will not include my Department as a party in its examination.

Compliance of the wind farm project with its planning permission is a matter for Galway County Council. I understand that the council has also arranged to have an expert examination of the likely cause carried out.

To be of assistance to the investigation of this incident, the Geological Survey of Ireland, an agency of my Department, in the context of its general scientific interest in landslide occurrences and soil movement, has visited the site and will include information gleaned from that visit in material to be published on its website in due course.
