177 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science the figures, on a county basis, of students attending third level colleges in Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27030/03]

The information requested by the Deputy is not available on a county basis. I am providing figures supplied to my Department's statistics section showing the numbers of students of Republic of Ireland domicile attending institutions in Britain and Northern Ireland. These figures were supplied by the Higher Education Statistics Agency Limited, the central source for higher education statistics for the UK.

There were 560 postgraduate full-time students of Republic of Ireland domicile in Northern Ireland and 1290 elsewhere in the UK, giving a total of 1850. The comparable figures for part-time such postgraduate students in Northern Ireland was 805, with 1780 elsewhere in the UK. giving a total of 2585. Undergraduate full-time Irish students numbered 1560 in Northern Ireland and 5445 elsewhere in the UK, giving a total of 7000. Undergraduate part-time Irish students in Northern Ireland numbered 605, with 1195 elsewhere in the UK, giving a total of 1800. The total number for postgraduate and undergraduate, part-time and full-time students of Republic of Ireland domicile in Northern Ireland was 3530, with the total number elsewhere in the UK being 9705. The grand total was 13,235. These data relate to student numbers in the 2001-02 academic year.

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows.

The total number of third level students from the Republic of Ireland studying in Britain in the 2001-02 academic year was 9,710. These data are not available on a county basis. A breakdown of these students by mode of study and level of study follows: undergraduate students: full time, 5,445, part time, 1,195. Postgraduate students: full time, 1,290, part time, 1,780.
