Vol. 575 No. 3

Written Answers. - Broadcasting Services.

Arthur Morgan

Ceist:

220 Mr. Morgan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the fact that despite repeated representations, the residents in five townlands running from Cross, Quigley's Point into the Carndonagh parish on the Inishowen peninsula, County Donegal, are still without a television reception for the national broadcaster, RTE, and that despite this they are expected to continue to pay their television licence fee; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that RTE could install a satellite system to address this problem but their technical department is under-resourced in terms of personnel and finance to facilitate this step; and his views on whether it is unacceptable that citizens are denied their democratic rights to gain access to news items of national interest through the national broadcaster. [28337/03]

RTE is a statutory corporation independent in day-to-day matters, including the fulfilling of that part of its remit through which it is required by law to provide a national broadcasting service that is available, in so far as is reasonably practicable, to the whole community on the island of Ireland. Notwithstanding this, I understand from RTE it now has a potential engineering solution to the reception problems in the Quigley's Point area of County Donegal. RTE proposes to have a survey carried out in the area to find a suitable transmission site. If this survey identifies a suitable site, pending the availability of funding, RTE should be in a position to install a low power system in the area during 2004. I understand from RTE that planning permission may be required for any such installation.
