66 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of murders recorded and the number of murders recorded in which firearms were used in 2003 to date; the figures for the equivalent period in each of the past five years; the number of cases in which murder charges have been initiated in relation to cases outlined; and if he will make a statement on the matter. 273 Mr. Costello asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of murders recorded and the number of murders recorded in which firearms were used in 2003 to date; the figures for the equivalent period in each of the past five years; the number of cases on which murder charges have been initiated in regard to each category; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 66 and 273 together.

The following tables set out the number of murders recorded and detected and proceedings commenced for the years 1998-2002 and 2003, up to 24 November, and the number of murders recorded, detected and proceedings commenced where firearms were used. As I stated previously, the Garda is continuing its investigations in each instance of unlawful killing which remains undetected.
