Vol. 576 No. 3

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31. I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted the notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the implications for employment and the economy in the Westmeath area with the announcement that Penn Racquet Sports Limited is to close its plant in Mullingar, County Westmeath, with the loss of 116 staff, and the need for the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to outline the steps she intends to take to try to avert this loss of jobs or to secure alternative employment.

I welcome the Taoiseach to the Chamber today. It is a pleasant surprise on a Thursday morning. Perhaps he is here because of the job losses in Mullingar.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the serious implications for employment in Westmeath and the economy generally of the announcement by Penn Racquet Sports Limited that it is to close its plant in Mullingar, County Westmeath, with the loss of 116 jobs, and the urgent need for the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to set out the steps she intends to take to try to avert this loss of jobs or the measures she intends to take to secure alternative employment.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: that an urgent full public inquiry be held to investigate the procedures and practices of consultants and management at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where some of the most serious medical abuses uncovered in this State took place causing untold trauma, pain and suffering for many unsuspecting trusting patients who became victims of caesarean hysterectomies, symphysiotomy and even death, and that such a public inquiry be established immediately.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the decision by the energy regulator to restrict the level of access of wind power to the national grid to less than 500 MW before 2005, and the need to discuss further the effect such a policy decision will have on our national climate change strategy and review the contents of the Garrad Hassan report on the matter published earlier which clearly stated that up to 2,000 MW of windpower could be provided in Ireland before it would be necessary to apply significant curtailment measures on wind power supply.

Having considered the matters raised I do not consider them to be in accordance with Standing Order 31 and therefore cannot grant leave to move the motions.
