Vol. 576 No. 5

Written Answers. - Swimming Pool Projects.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

316 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if he has an application from Cork City Council for the development of a swimming pool at Churchfield; when the application was received; the total cost of the project; and when a decision will be made on funding so work can commence without further delay. [29916/03]

The contract documents for the refurbishment of Churchfield swimming pool were submitted to my Department in September 2002 and were approved in December 2002. This allowed Cork City Council to invite tenders for the project. The total estimated cost of the refurbishment as set out in the tender documentation is €8.74 million, with eligible costs under the local authority swimming pool programme at €7.28 million. This tender documentation is under consideration in my Department and I hope to be in a position to respond to the council shortly.

Under the 2002 sports capital programme, a grant of €400,000 was provisionally allocated to Cork City Council towards the provision of ancillary facilities, for example, changing rooms, fitness studio and so forth, at the Churchfield leisure complex. Payment of the grant will be made by my Department on receipt of the necessary documentation and certification from Cork City Council in accordance with the terms and conditions of the sports capital programme.
