Vol. 576 No. 5

Written Answers. - Industrial Disputes.

Joe Sherlock

Ceist:

115 Mr. Sherlock asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the recent announcement by a company (details supplied) that it is to make 500 workers redundant, compulsorily if necessary, prior to Christmas 2003; if these planned redundancies have been formally notified to her Department; if she plans to have discussions with the company to see if these redundancies can be averted, in view of the human and economic consequences of such job losses; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [29922/03]

The proposed redundancies referred to by the Deputy have been formally notified to me by the company in question. I understand that the implementation of the redundancies is the subject of ongoing discussions between management and unions. Enterprise Ireland and FÁS are maintaining close contact with the company on its proposed rationalisation programme.
