I propose to take Questions Nos. 544 and 545 together.
Some 7,000 voting machines will be available for use at the 2004 European and local elections. The exact number of machines to be used in each county has not yet been finalised. The elected members of local authorities are responsible for making a polling scheme dividing a county or city council into polling districts, with their associated polling places for the purposes of elections. While the number of machines to be used at any polling location is then a matter for each returning officer, there will be at least one voting machine for each ballot box previously used. Additional machines will be available, as required.
The first table below sets out, from information available in the Department, details of the number of polling stations in each county at the last local elections. The second table sets out, from information available in the Department, details of polling stations on a Dáil constituency basis at last year's general election. Detailed arrangements for the 2004 polls are scheduled to be finalised next May. The term "polling station" traditionally refers to a ballot box, table, presiding officer and poll clerk. A polling building may contain a number of polling stations.
