Vol. 577 No. 4

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

John Cregan

Ceist:

248 Mr. Cregan asked the Minister for Transport if he has satisfied himself that the proposed legislation reflects the latest scientific and medical information available in regard to a report (details supplied); if a commitment will be given that proposed legislation affecting flight and duty time limitations will consider the latest scientific and medical evidence available to his office; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As I have stated in replies to previous questions on this subject, the day-to-day oversight of aviation safety falls within the responsibility of the Irish Aviation Authority. The IAA has not yet completed its examination of the European Parliament report on this issue. When making a policy decision on a matter of aviation safety, I am guided by the advice received from experts in the IAA. At a preliminary meeting on this issue held in Brussels recently, the European Commission indicated that it would present a revised proposal on the subject in the new year.

I reiterate that, in so far as this proposal may lead to legislative changes, I can assure the Deputy that I always give the highest priority to safety matters.
