Vol. 1032 No. 5

Pause for Peace

Today, 1 February, is St. Brigid's day. St. Brigid was a peacemaker who promoted healing and reconciliation. I need not remind Members that today, on St. Brigid's Day, war still rages in many parts of the world. With that in mind, in a moment I will ask Members to stand for a minute's silence, a pause for peace, if you like, to show solidarity with those innocent persons whose lives have been damaged or destroyed by war, and to support the cause of worldwide peace.

Before we stand, I understand the Taoiseach wishes to say a few words.

Is ionann Lá Fhéile Bríde, nó Imbolc, an chéad lá de mhí Feabhra agus an t-earrach agus an tús nua. Beidh lá saoire poiblí nua againn ar an Luan seo chugainn. It bookmarks the start of the traditional Celtic new year as we move from winter into a period of light and hope. In this pause for peace, we are asking people to come together to be inspired by the life of Brigid of Kildare, Brigid the peacemaker, the protector of the natural world and a formidable force for justice whose light shines ever more brightly today. Guímid síocháin, sláinte agus sonas oraibh féin agus ar bhur dteaghlaigh agus muid ag seasamh ar son na síochána ar Lá Fhéile Bríde.

Members rose.
