Vol. 1054 No. 4

Visit of Western Australia Delegation

Before proceeding to our next contributor, Deputy Munster, I ask Members to join me in extending a very warm céad míle fáilte to the Honourable Michelle Roberts MLA, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the vast province of Western Australia. Speaker Roberts is the first woman to hold the position of Speaker of the Assembly and, believe it or not, she is also its longest-serving current member. She is the Mother of the House in Western Australia. Additionally, she has distinguished herself in several ministries in that province where she has made real and meaningful reforms for the people she represents in her constituency and throughout Western Australia. This includes many people of Irish origin, whether historically or those from more recent first and second generations. Speaker Roberts is joined by her husband, Greg. She was also to have been joined by our good friend, Ambassador Gary Gray. The ambassador is leaving us in August or September and, hopefully, we will have an opportunity to say goodbye to him because he has been the longest serving Australian ambassador in Ireland.

Members rose and applauded.
