JOINT COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE AND FOOD díospóireacht -
Wednesday, 3 Dec 2003

Vol. 1 No. 26

Business of Joint Committee.

On No. 4 on the agenda, the clerk to the committee has circulated copies of documents for scrutiny prepared by the policy adviser. A number of items have been included for information purposes only. There are no proposals for further scrutiny.

The clerk to the committee has circulated an updated note on the proposal regarding the transportation of live animals. We had a detailed discussion with the Department of Agriculture and Food on this issue, as can be seen from the note. It appears that discussions on the proposal will continue for some time. The committee and the Department are at one on this issue. Accordingly, no further scrutiny is required and a report on our meeting with the Department officials and the EU Commissioner is to be prepared for adoption at our next meeting. Is that agreed? Agreed.

On No. 5, a copy of a letter has been received from the National Milk Rights Group seeking a meeting with the joint committee to express its concerns about the survival of family farming. Have members any comments to make on this request?

I propose that we offer to meet the group at the earliest possible date.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, 17 December at 2.30 p.m. Is that agreed? Agreed.

On No. 6, the clerk to the committee is preparing the work programme for 2004. If members have any suggestions they should forward them in writing to the clerk as soon as possible because the work programme will be up for discussion in early January. The clerk will make contact with all members in this regard.

The joint committee adjourned at 2.45 p.m. until 11.30 a.m. on Thursday, 11 December 2003.
